Art Principles

This class is a taste of both Art History and the Fine Arts. Throughout this year-long course, students will learn about different artists and their use of shape, color, composition, and materials, and learn to create their own inspiring works of art. From Michelangelo to Matisse, a broad array of artists and movements are taught as students experiment with different mediums.

Art Institute I

Students interested in developing their artistic ability, or interested to see if they are more artistic than they believe, enroll in this popular elective course. Art Institute I challenges students to use different mediums and work on skills such as sketching and shading. An SHS Art Institute I student was the proud recipient of a National Scholastic Art Award in 2019.

Art Institute II

An intensive art program for those interested in exploring multiple media, including drawing, painting, sculpting, and more. Students will produce their own works of art and create exhibitions on a monthly basis.

Art Institute III

This third year of the art institute is an even more intensive art program for those interested in exploring multiple media: drawing, painting, sculpture, and more.

Art Institute IV/AP ART

This senior level course is designed for the student who wishes to further develop skills and techniques that were introduced in previous drawing and painting courses. This is a desirable course for any student wishing to develop a portfolio for college. Students will be continually encouraged to expand their creative ideas as well as their technical potential. The course will approach drawing and painting utilizing various techniques and materials.
