Visual Arts

The SHS Art Institute is a four-year course of study in visual arts. The Art Institute provides a dynamic curriculum within an environment conducive to artistic risk-taking, skill development, and student expression. It enables students to acquire the tools necessary for lifelong artistic learning and application. The Arts Program accommodates individual learning styles and develops students’ skills working in a variety of techniques. Implementing the elements and principles of design, students in the Art Institute create a portfolio of work of the highest standard.

In our Photography program, students study the process of photography, camera technique, composition, light, color contrast and harmony, space, texture and other artistically useful perceptions. Students are also introduced to digital cameras and computer manipulation of photographs. They also study various genres of photography including black and white, portrait, landscape, nature and cityscape.

In our Graphic Design program, students study 2-D and 3-D design. They learn the foundational graphic design principles (fonts, colors, images, backgrounds, and layouts) needed to create and edit images using programs including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. They create effective graphics, posters, flyers, and other custom designs working with layers, infographics, tracing artwork, and more.
